We met on Friday night at 6pm at the West Seattle High School parking lot and left at around 6:30pm. We arrived at Camp Pigott at around 8pm, drove past the Craft Lodge and around the back to the Skagit campsite, and settled into camp. We ate dinner and had a nice campfire.
We woke up at 7am on Saturday, made and ate breakfast, cleaned up the food, and got into our paddling clothes. We went over proper clothing, gear, parts of the paddle, and demonstrated how to execute different strokes at the Craft Lodge before heading down to the lake. Camp Pigott has a couple dozen canoes and tons of PFDs and paddles, so we got geared up, showed the parts of a canoe, and how to get into and launch a canoe properly. After that we got everyone on the water to work on all the strokes, maneuvered the canoes in various ways, and had a couple races.
We headed back to the campsite at around noon to eat lunch, and then back to the lake for the wet part of the training. Scouts learned how to get out of the canoes and back in as well as how to capsize and rescue the canoes in a few different ways.
After the training was finished, Scouts started working on their food for the Dutch Oven cook-off. For some reason, each Patrol skipped the dessert and bread and only made a main course, but they were all very tasty and well-prepared. They had chicken pot pie, stuffed crust pepperoni pizza, and chili w/cornbread. We ended the second night with another campfire.
We woke up early on Sunday again and got breakfast going. Adults organized several practice Camporee games including A-Frame Race, All Aboard (build a tri-pod that can hold everyone in the Patrol), Concentration, Dining Fly Setup, Knife Throwing, Log Saw, and Tomahawk Throwing.
We loaded gear into vehicles, swept the camp several times for trash, held a Scouts’ Own in the camp chapel, and visited the OA Longhouse before leaving camp at 3:15pm. We got back to the church a little before 5pm. – MHG
