A Memorable Weekend Escape to Twin Lakes: Climbing, Chess, and Campfire Tales

October 21-22, 2023

This past weekend, we embarked on a backpacking adventure to Twin Lakes near Snoqualmie, expecting the beauty of nature and the joy of outdoor activities. Little did we know, this trip would turn into an unforgettable experience filled with elevation gains, strategic chess matches, quirky campfire stories, and, of course, a bit of unexpected rain. Join us as we recount the highlights of our great backpacking weekend in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.
Our journey kicked off with a challenging ascent and descent, navigating through the rugged terrain that surrounds Twin Lakes. The elevation gain amounted to a whopping 3,000 feet, equivalent to conquering a small mountain. Each step, 17,000 in total on Saturday alone, brought us closer to the breathtaking views awaiting us at the top. The physical exertion was demanding, but the sense of accomplishment was well worth the effort.
Upon reaching the summit at 4,500 feet, we took a well-deserved break to enjoy a game of chess. Playing at such a high altitude added an extra layer of challenge, as both the breathtaking scenery and the intense mental concentration competed for our attention. The combination of strategic moves and panoramic views created a unique chess experience that will be etched in our memories.
As the evening descended, we gathered around the campfire to share stories that took unexpected turns. Strangely enough, our tales revolved around the topic of milk, weaving a narrative web that left us laughing and scratching our heads in equal measure. There’s something magical about sharing stories under the starlit sky, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature.
Nature had its own plans for our adventure, as a gentle rain shower paid us a brief visit. While some might have seen it as an inconvenience, we embraced the light rain as part of the wilderness experience. The droplets on the leaves, the smell of wet earth, and the patter on our tent became a symphony that enhanced the overall ambiance of our outdoor retreat.
No camping trip is complete without hearty meals, and ours was no exception. We indulged in a feast that seemed to rival the abundance of nature surrounding us. From trail mix to dehydrated delights, our backpacks carried an assortment of treats that fueled our bodies for the next day’s adventures. As we savored each bite, the joy of camaraderie and the thrill of the outdoors blended into a perfect recipe for an unforgettable weekend.
Our backpacking weekend to Twin Lakes, despite being just one pond, offered a plethora of experiences that exceeded our expectations. From conquering challenging heights to engaging in high-altitude chess, sharing campfire stories about milk, embracing the touch of rain, and indulging in a feast of delights, every moment added to the richness of our adventure. This trip stands as a testament to the beauty of nature and the lasting memories created when we disconnect from the hustle of daily life and immerse ourselves in the wonders of the great outdoors.
